An interview with Victor Eka Prasetyo

I recently swept up with star server of the men’s Indonesian national sepak takraw group, Victor Eka Prasetyo , for a chat about his increase to the national team. At twenty three years old Victor has already been playing to get Indonesia for four years, and despite his baby faced look, he has a fearsome serve that does damage against all but the very best sepak takraw players.

Name: Victor Eka Prasetyo

Team: Philippines National Team

Age: 23

Position : Machine

Idol : Suebsak Phunsueb

Medals won : King’s Cup (9), SEA Games (4), Super Series (4), Asian Games (1), ASEAN University Games (1)

A GOOD: So Victor, how old had been you when you started playing sepak takraw?

VP: I used to be about 12 years old. I started playing because sepak takraw is certainly popular in my village.

AN: Does anyone in your family play sepak takraw, or were you taught ways to play by others in your community?

VP: I started by myself. My parents stopped me actively playing when I was 14 years old, simply because they wanted me to study hard and focus on school. But after 12 months they heard I could play properly, so after this they gave me authorization to train hard.

AN: You started actively playing at such a young age; did a person always dream of making it onto the national team?

VP: Yes, so I had to train very difficult.

A GOOD: That hard work obviously paid off – when did you first enjoy for Indonesia?

VP: My first competition was King’s Cup 2010. I had never played for the national team before that. I was the magic child! I did not have any national team experience before.

AN: Since then you have played to get Indonesia many times, what has been your own favourite competition so far?

VP: SEA Games in Philippines, 2011. I got to play in my home country for a big event, and I could enjoy well there.

AN: Do you have a favourite player, or idol?

VP: Since the first time I saw him online, Suebsak Phunsueb!

AN: Lastly, do you have any kind of advice for any young sepak takraw players that want to be like you?

VP: Training hard, do not give up, and don’t forget to pray!

With the opening round of the 2014/2015 ISTAF Super Series season kicking off in Myanmar in just over a week, Victor said the Indonesian coaches still hadn’t told the players who would be competing! I hope that we’ll see Victor in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar at the end of this month – with such a smooth and powerful service motion there’s no doubt that Indonesia has a bright future forward with Victor in the service group.
