Belgian Open on the calendar

Published on October 26, 2015 by   ·   No Comments

While the STL has started up in Malaysia and the ISS 2014/2015 has reached its fantastic finale, there is still plenty of sepaktakraw going on in Europe. The latest within a long line of tournaments is the Belgian Open, held in the picturesque community of De Pinte, close to Ghent, on 31 October and one November.

“The organisation is on full alert to get ready everything for our biggest event from the year, ” says Ben Lentacker, one of the driving forces behind sepaktakraw in Belgium and a familiar, bespectacled figure on the European circuit. “We expect between 15 and 20 teams. Elmshorn, Paris, Cologne, Strasbourg, Basel, Cannes, De Pinte… they are all teams that have confirmed formally or unofficially already. Maybe we are going to even have a team from Serbia, but most teams confirm last-minute like always, ” he grins.

“We will have a increases competition and a regu A plus B competition. Last year we furthermore organized a youth competition but only our youths turned up, so now they will compete in the regular competition. Some teams will be combined, and there will be women’s, men’s plus mixed teams all competing against each other in the same events in some cases. ”

“Plenty associated with clubs will bring more than one team, plus De Pinte will have four – a men’s, a women’s, a boys’ team and a girls’ team. We arranged a sleeping hall close to the playing hall and organized some delicious local food meant for during the day! We’ve also had a specific trophy made. It is based on the design of the Belgian Sepaktakraw Federation’s logo design, and was produced using 3D technology, so it’s really worth fighting for! ”

“Every two years, we usually do a marketing week before the tournament where a team from Malaysian Airlines help us to promote not only the tournament however the sport. We’ve had different workshops and demos every two years, giving out balls to local schools. PORÉM have unfortunately had to cancel this year, and also the national team of Malaysia would have come but our date clashes because of the ISTAF Super Series Finals. So we cancelled everything for the promotional week unfortunately, because we cannot do it all ourselves! The good thing, though, is that the local media is usually interested and is most likely going to come and interview players and movie action during the tournament. ”

So , everything seems to have already been catered for by Ben, but there is one aspect that he cannot legislate for – his partner Alexa is currently eight months pregnant! “I hope she does not give delivery to our first child sooner than expected because otherwise I maybe are unable to compete at the Belgium Open, but I’ll worry about that if and when this happens. Anyway, the club plus organisation is prepared for that! ” What a hero! Best wishes to you each, and of course to everyone taking part at the Belgian Open.
