Melaka itself is no stranger in order to sepaktakraw; historical records dating back towards the 1400’s tell of the heir towards the Sultan of Melaka having their ceremonial headgear knocked off by an errant rattan! Now, even though, Melaka will play host to the best 8 men’s international teams and the best 6 women’s international groups in what is sure to be nothing less than a spectacular showdown. ISS Melaka follows on from the starting round of the 2014/15 SuperSeries time of year which was held in Myanmar, and when ISS Myanmar is anything to go by, we are in for a treat at round two. On the finals day associated with ISS Myanmar we were witness for some truly epic matches by the large teams, including a fantastic fight for the women’s bronze medal between Indonesia and Myanmar, and of course that unforgettable men’s gold medal match among Thailand and Malaysia.

In the ISS Myanmar women’s bronze medal match the Indonesian females showed that they are genuine ISS name contenders by putting up a fantastic combat what was, on paper at least, a stronger Myanmar side. It was a long 68-minute tug of war that was ultimately won by Myanmar, and even though Indonesia’s women won’t compete within Melaka, the real take-away from this fit is that there’s no telling who also the next challenger to Thailand is going to be. Korea, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Vietnam are all virtually inseparable , and with an always improving Japanese side nipping at their particular heels, there is no room for mistake for any of the women’s teams whenever they play in Melaka.

The women’s matches were good, but the men’s matches were better – at ISS Myanmar at least! The men’s gold medal fit stole the show, and put an exclamation mark on what was a brilliant tournament, when Thailand and Malaysia went blow for blow over a huge three-setter that was finally earned by Thailand 22: 20, 18: 21, 23: 21 – this doesn’t get much closer than that! Consider that both Asia and Malaysia fielded young and somewhat inexperienced teams (as did Korea, China, and Japan) and yet we were still treated to an mind blowing battle, there’s no doubting that the old Malay-Thai rivalry lives on in ISS competition . And, after experimenting with youngsters in Myanmar, many teams is going to be going back to their hero-players in Melaka. This is going to be big!
