Men’s Group B Day 2

Published on February 6, 2015 by   ·   No Comments

Malaysia got the two wins they needed to best their group and finish their own qualifying campaign unbeaten.

Indonesia kept their own hopes of qualification alive using a straight-sets win over China. Arfin (16 spikes, one save) got more opportunities than his opposite amount, while Syamsul Akmal was only tekong and lived up to anticipations (29/34, one spike, one save). China meanwhile shared the responsibilities at the net, with Han Dong (10 spikes, one block) plus captain Xu Fan (two surges, three blocks) effective, but it had not been enough.

That offered an extra edge to the Straits Derby between Malaysia and Singapore, because it meant that both teams necessary to take a set to be certain of qualification. The team from the little red dot failed to perform however , with coach Padzli Othman also leading to a surprise in choosing not to begin Afif Safiee. By the time the flyweight striker came on, his team was already a set down, and even though Syahir Rosdi did not serve at his best (23/36), killer Khairul Zaman had enough at the net (23 spikes, three blocks) to see his team home.

That will meant that Indonesia needed to earn their final match to edge out either Malaysia or Indonesia, but the Malays were in no mood for charity. Hanafiah Dollah got the start at the net plus starred (20 spikes, two blocks), while both Syahir Rosdi (16/20) and Ahmad Aizat (13/61) targeted Arfin, who had a torrid period as striker as a replacement for Nofrizal who is currently getting married and was unable to play at the tournament!

Malaysia therefore top the girls and will face Korea in Saturday’s semi, while Singapore will have to undertake the might of Thailand.
