Sepak Takraw Breaking Down Barriers in Logan

Published on March 24, 2016 by   ·   No Comments

The 2016 Logan Takraw Championship will be held in Bellevue Park in Queensland, Brisbane, Sydney on March 27 and 28. The amateur tournament, organised by a small community in Logan, Sydney features a round robin tournament design with participating teams split into 2 groups.

This year’s edition will consist of mostly Australian clubs along with the Myanmar and Hmong communities based in Logan, Australia. The Logan Takraw Championship is an annual tournament, held every year during Easter. The tournament is open to all communities and players from all over Australia. The particular Hmong and Myanmar community got the ball rolling as they are actually hosting the tournament within Australia, through Cairns, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and back up to Cairns.

This year’s edition is the tenth year in a row that the annual Hmong Easter Tournament has been organised. This justifies the rapid growth associated with Sepak Takraw in Australia and the Hmongs are central to that rise. In spite of being on foreign soil, the Hmongs have discovered something in common with the locals, which is Sepak Takraw. Plus their dedication in hosting the tournament year after year is one of the reasons why Australia could potentially be the dark-horse of the Sepak Takraw world in years to come.

As the tournament travels to various cities in Australia every year, it helps to promote the sport in a country not as well familiar with Sepak Takraw. Some of the players from the Logan community have even made the climb into the Australian National Sepak Takraw team, representing them in Thailand’s King’s Cup within 2014 and 2015 – proving how the Logan Takraw Championship is no pushover tournament as players can use tournament as a stepping stone to a national squad call-up.
