Sepaktakraw comes to Las Vegas!

Published on November 24, 2014 by   ·   No Comments

Sepaktakraw is a huge sport in some nations, particularly in South-East Asia, but in other lands it is virtually unheard of. This is why it is always so good to see teams from outside the heartlands playing within the ISTAF tournaments, in particular the forthcoming ISTAF 2015 World Cup.

USA have obviously been mainstays of the ISTAF SuperSeries ever since they qualified for the inaugural event by defeating Iran in that thrilling ISTAF 2011 World Cup play-off, and before we see all of them in action again, they have a big event of their own.

Jeremy Mirken is a name well-known throughout the ISTAF sepaktakraw community. He became “the beard that’s feared” in the ISS 2013/14, psyching out opponents with his hand-waving rituals between points plus impressing with his ever-improving defensive skills as a setter after converting through the US sport of footbag.

He has thrown himself totally behind the sepaktakraw adventure, my numbers were so high that he is responsible for organising the Usa States’ first professional sepaktakraw competition: the 2014-15 SkillCon Sepaktakraw Open, taking place in Las Vegas on 27-28 December. The tournament will be a part of SkillCon, which describes itself as the ultimate object manipulation convention with a week of competitions, workshops, keynote speakers, seminars and games. TELEVISION channel ESPN International is covering selected events at Skillcon, including World Juggling Federation and Major League Combat events, and Jeremy is hopeful that the footage through the 2014-15 SkillCon Sepaktakraw Open may also be considered for ESPN International insurance.

For now, Jeremy can be excited to announce that TV channel PlanetX, which produces a 30-minute action sports show for 80 million homes across the United States, can partner with him to edit plus air the 2014-15 SkillCon Sepaktakraw Open on their channel.

“I’m hoping for 12-15 teams to be playing, including the best in the USA, ” says Jeremy, who has also sent out invitations to all of the European sepaktakraw-playing nations. “If all goes properly in terms of fundraising, we are looking at handing out at least $2, 500USD in prize money which should act as a further motivation. A number of local businesses are already enthusiastic to get involved, including Oakland Silver precious metal & Gold, the title bring in for the tournament, which is also a previous sponsor of the USA National Sepaktakraw team. I am also hard at the office raising money via crowd-funding. We are nearly 80% funded now, and yes it looks like we are on track to reach the aim of $6, 500USD. ”

“Jason Garfield, who is president of SkillCon, is delighted with the project and hopes that the SkillCon Sepaktakraw Open becomes an annual event. We are holding this event on 27-28 Dec over a weekend so that a maximum number of players and teams can take part. Besides competing in the competitors, current and former members from the US National Sepaktakraw team can host two free workshops for newbies and advanced players, with the expectations of attracting new players plus sharing knowledge amongst America’s rising stars. My dream would be to provide enough funds to fly in a top-level international team or at least a player, and while that might not happen this season, the event has the potential to become really big very soon. ”

Jeremy is a very popular figure in the sepaktakraw scene and will no doubt be able to use his charisma to motivate players to take part. From USA, Ker and True Cha, plus their older brother Sue Cha, are usually confirmed to be bringing a team from Minnesota, while another ISTAF participant, John Thao, has lined up four players including two of his brothers to form a second regu. Jeremy meanwhile will play alongside Jim Thao (spiker) and Moua Lor (tekong) in an all-Californian team, while at least one team each from Fresno, San Diego, Las Vegas, Texas, Utah plus Idaho will also be taking part.

With a turn-out like that, this could be one of the greatest tournaments that USA has observed and help to put our game of sepaktakraw on the American sporting chart.
