Since November of 2014 the all new SepakTakraw League has been tearing around the Malaysian countryside in search of the very best players and teams the country provides, and along the way has put on a spectacular show for the local sepaktakraw enthusiasts that turned out in droves, and also those watching the live protection. The preliminary rounds in Terengganu, Kedah, Johor, and Malacca were all in anticipation of the Grand Final round in Kuala Lumpur, where we were to crown the most effective team in Malaysia!

Want to know how enormous this particular endeavour was? Check out these amounts:

5 different locations around Malaysia
20 days of competition
320 matches of sepaktakraw
128 contending teams
131, 000 Malaysian Ringgit total prize money granted

That’s a whole heap of sepaktakraw and cash to look with it!

This many culminated in a fantastic Grand Final round on the 17th and eighteenth of January in Titiwangsa Stadium, Kuala Lumpur; and what an incredible event it was! The 16 top groups in the country were now brought collectively to do battle over two days, and one team would emerge as the champions of the STL and would therefore take the unofficial title of ‘Best Sepaktakraw Team in Malaysia’ . The enthusiasts were divided as to who they will thought would take out the top reward; no one could be expected to confidently select a winner from such closely combined teams!

There were a number of upsets in the group stages, yet none were bigger than when PKNS, resplendent with national players Farhan Adam, Khairul Zaman, and Sahidan Ali, failed to achieve the quarter finals ! It just goes to show how good the competition had been! However , once we made it to the semi-finals, just four teams remained, and they truly were the cream of the crop.

The semi final suit between Hanelang A and ATM A was perhaps the best suit of sepaktakraw of the whole competition – and you can watch it here! This is the live tv coverage, complete with sultry Australian commentary and extremely slow motion replays for your looking at pleasure:

If you watched that match, you’ll understand how well Hanelang A was playing on that final day of competition. And so it was fitting which they went on to defeat PDRM M in the gold medal match, plus earn the title of the Best Team in Malaysia!

Sobey

Zulkifli Abdul Razak helping for Hanelang A

The trio of Zulkifli Abdul Razak (Sobey), Safaruddin Abu Bakar, and Fadzli Roslan, all whom are national team players, showed us how sepaktakraw must be played. Sobey served up a storm and racked up countless service aces with his drop serves, while Safaruddin, who must be the fastest feeder you’ll ever see, backed the high flying Fadzli Roslan in the net – giving Fadzli each opportunity he needed to get creative with his roll spikes and sunback spike variations.

Nonetheless it wasn’t their skill that endeared them to the crowd; it was their tenacious yet jovial nature on court that made them so fun to watch. Always smiling, always making noise, and occasionally poking fun at one another for errors; this team personifies what Malaysian sepaktakraw is all about – fun .

At the rear of every one of the 320 matches in this 1st season there was a diligent team of production and operations deck hands on the sidelines making sure everything ran smoothly, and of course filming and creating the fantastic television and livestream displays so that we could enjoy watching the very best STL action from the comfort of our own lounge rooms! Thanks to them, enthusiasts all over the world didn’t miss a single suit. It also means that until the 2nd period of the STL rolls around, you can re-watch all of the STL matches on the LiveStream website by clicking here , and then simply select which round you would like to view!
